Yeah, I think so too! Kind of an interesting variant on the Ursula K. Le Guin Hainish novel formula. If I were to write it I'd make the point that the protagonist was a member of a team explicit. With one of her colleagues being a diaspora member who's doing grad work in the physical sciences and thinks she's hilariously dorky. Humans. What can you say?
