Yesterday my mom and I went down to one of the local wetland rookery sites and watched the cormorants and the herons set up for the season.

Through binoculars I spotted one of the cormorants that had already finished its nest and looked like it maybe was already sitting on an egg. I watched it twist its long neck around in all directions, including arched straight over its back and hiss with its mouth ride open and its tongue sticking out at its neighbors because! They were stealing sticks from its completed nest! Go get your own, ya free loaders!

There were too many stick thieves. As soon as one had been hissed at there was another stick thief at a different point on the nest compass, and that one had to be hissed at and then there was another - - - !
