I'm trying to find a way to be scathingly funny about the vaguely homophobic joke my professor made about Lafeyette's letters to Washington in class yesterday, because maybe that way it will hurt less, but right now I can't manage it.

Yeah, you know what? Why don't you go slam your hand in a drawer. These things happen too.

*snarl* My professors are normally incredibly good, but I've gotten hit with those kinds of jokes once or twice, and it's always a helpless feeling of what do you say to that.

*hugs* Thanks. I wouldn't have previously put it past this professor, who is kind of. Kind of. He tries way too hard to be cool, when, I'm sorry, you have a PhD in history, you might as well embrace the geek. And that kind of trying to be cool rarely goes good places. But I wasn't expecting it because he was showing a documentary, and I wasn't braced for any comments, and I hadn't run across Layfette's letters before, so I was still in that stage of dawning recognition and fond amusement as I listened to some actor read his effusive, flirty, You're So Wonderful And Your Wife Is Wonderful And My Wife Thinks So Too And I Couldn't Possibly Be Jealous Because I'd Love To Throw Myself At Your Feet So I Know Just How She Feels, Please Come Visit, Everyone Here Will Love You Almost As Much As We Do letter.

So I mean. I'd just started smiling to myself and then - *shrugs*

*nod* Some professors apparently don't realize that being merely mentioned, no matter how dismissively, is not progressive wrt LGBTQ, and it hits like a slap in the face.

I want to go find and read those letters now, though.
