I sent a message to the OTW Board of Directors to insist on their responsibility to act on their commitments to address racist abuse and harassment on Ao3 as part of the #EndOTWRacism two week action.

A link to the call to action on Tumblr

In our white supremacist society any community, space, or organization that contains white people and is not explicitly and actively anti-racist will become a structure that shields and maintains white privilege and actively perpetuates white supremacy.

That is not acceptable to me. That is not what I want my community to be. We all have to act and speak up together, and make our communities, spaces, and organizations anti racist instead of racist, by changing what is acceptable in our communities, and what is not. What is valued, and what is not. Who is valued, and who is not.

Fans of color need to be valued. They should be. Their safety and their joy need to be valued as integral elements of fandom and fannish communities, not cordoned off as somehow 'special', 'different', an option that can be discarded. Fans of color are living people who live here.

That's what I want to be valued.

Dear Chocolatier,

Heya! Thank you for creating something for me! I requested both writing and art in my sign up and I genuinely would be delighted with either!

Overall, I'm always interested in worlds and how they work, how character interacts with worldbuilding, how people are in the place they live in, how their worlds affect their relationships -

I like all the different and highly varied ways there are to be in relationship with other people and with the world around you. I like playing with canon worldbuilding and exploring it, and I like seeing other fans do so too! I like it when genres collide, and I like adventure, and building good communities and lives in the middle of/the despite of/because of a terrifying/inimical wider reality.

Mostly I hope you really have fun with whatever you choose to work on. This letter might be a little thin? I've never done one before it's freaking me out so I decided to just go for it. But I am leaving anon on on this entry, so if you have a question please feel free to ask!

Thanks again,

[community profile] trope_bingo is doing an open amnesty round for their twelfth round, and they're having folks generate their own cards using An Owomoyela's bingo card generator if they don't have an outstanding card.

I don't currently have an outstanding card I'm pretty sure, so I went to use the card generator, because I cannot resist widgets, and also I've been intending to work on actually getting words down (on paper) and up (on the web).

The card generator is so cool! One of its pre-set list possibilities is the Arne Thompson story type typology! I am definitely going to have to play more with that! (And write Owomoyela a nice note. And their fiction sounds up my alley too!)

I am so sick of the broad swathe of Clone Wars fandom that apparently cannot write Ahsoka as a character in her own right instead of some kind of prop to make the men around her feel things or look good. Sometimes a cute kid shaped cardboard cutout to complete a domestic tableau. Sometimes some kind of shorthand scrapegoat for the Council.

So many long scenes where men humiliate her and we the audience are meant to applaud because she 'deserved that' (you can tell, because the author wrote her saying something 'problematic) or it's understandable from the man's perspective, so it's all okay! You can freely enjoy the polemic directed against a girl child/woman. Except! Oh wait! some authors have a woman deliver the dressing down in part. That makes it so much better. I mean, when she has nothing to do but say Wrong And Bad things and be humiliated and have her humiliation serve as cathartic confirmation of their opinions for the audience or sometimes, to educate some other character (usually a man) it's so much better if a woman gets to endlessly correct and lecture and often belittle her, right? That makes it not troublesome at all, anymore!

So many fics where she doesn't turn up except as proof (usually merely in dialogue) that Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are really and truly good people because they're training her to follow their example whatever their example is that the author believes proves their goodness.

So many author's notes about how they just love Ahsoka, that's why in this fic she has nothing to do but say things that everyone immediately disagrees with and that the audience is clearly meant to disagree with. That are signaled to be bad. Have compassion for her and don't think the author is bashing just because they had her call someone a slur never even used in canon and she's here merely to create conflict and be yelled at. But the author understands she's just been mislead by her culture. They've tried to do justice to her character. That's why she's out of character and here just for someone to take out their anger on! That's why the scene ends with her stunned to silence and deeply hurt!

nrrrrrrrrrrgh

Really it just. It hurts my heart so much. It makes me so sad. So much of the series is about Ahsoka growing up and growing into herself. So much fanfic seems to want instead to cram her into a box smaller than the space she starts out in.

One of my least favorite things is when people use what I usually call peripheral canon to verbally smack or demean other fans or try to interrupt their creative play.

Peripheral canon is stuff that is by the canon's creators or their authorized proxies, is the same continuity as the canon, and is official, but is not part of the central piece of the canon text. So things like tie in comics, tie in novels, novelizations, video games, design books, toys and toy bios, officially sanctioned wikia, and things like Pottermore if there is ever a thing like Pottermore that is not Pottermore. Sometimes creators' interviews fall under this category, depending on how the fandom treats them, but usually those are more Word Of God/Creator type stuff.

Peripheral canon is great! It offers such gems as the really creepy entry on centaurs in the HP verse in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, and Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls calling Wendy a Warrior Princess From The Moons Of Venus, the existence of minicons in the Transformers Animated universe, and Big Finish's Doctor Who audios. Great stuff! Truly great stuff!

But people are not obligated to engage with it. (Honestly, if people contradict the actual mainline of canon with their creative play, that is okay too, but people getting shirty about people not having read/listened to peripheral canon is even more annoying to me.) Reading more of this stuff does not make you a better fan. If, say, someone writes a Transformers Animated story in which there are no minicons, they are not contradicting show canon, and that story is not automatically an au. Scolding someone for writing Susan Foreman as childless and not having encountered her grandfather again until his uh - - - Twelfth or Thirteenth depending on how you're counting - incarnation for contradicting canon is dumb. Telling someone that Elita-1 can't have been Orion Pax's good friend before the war because there's a throw away reference in a tie in that says she wasn't and by wanting that the Elita fan is hetwashing is - Obnoxious beyond the telling on several levels, actually. My point is, peripheral canon does not trump the central text, and it does not trump fans' creative play with that central text. Not everyone can access that peripheral canon (it's often expensive) and not everyone is gonna want to - it may not be in their favorite media, or they might want to play with the elements that canon leaves open or whatever - and you don't have to to be a fan!

People reeeeaaally need to stop invoking it intending to shut down other fans' creative play, instead of using it to widen that creative, collective play up.

Jerks.

Not anyone reading this. Just you know. General jerks.

Dear The Hobbit Fandom*,

What in the name of little green apples makes you think that hobbits would consider communal bathing inappropriate? There is direct canon* evidence to the contrary!

Getting a little tired of being thrown by this, but much love anyway,

Nanni

*Not to be confused with Hobbit fandom.

*Yes, yes, I know that most of the people doing this probably haven't read Lord of the Rings and there's nothing in PJ's films about it except a snippet of Bilbo's Bath Song entirely without context, but a lot of stuff that's only in the books has filtered through...

Plagiarism situation, resolved! Three cheers for the AO3 abuse team!

That was painless.

It's so nice to be able to leave these things in other people's capable hands.

And on that general note, back to the very last of the grading!

...How. How exactly does one deal with fandom plagiarism cases? Does anyone have any tips?

This has legit never happened to me before, I am completely confused.

Homestuck fandom, why.

... ... ....although people appear to like it? It already has four kudos on A03. Under someone else's account. What the hell.

EDIT: No, seriously, this is bizarre. That's entirely my story, my title, my summary, just with all my headers and warnings stripped out.

Oh, and my name. That's gone too.

This is the primary reason I noticed, I mean, I was like "Oh, wow, I used that same Ann Radcliffe quote for a - - - ... ....Aradia<>Sollux story oh shit don't let this be happening I don't want the drama." But. Alas. It was.

I am terrified about going to see my psychiatrist tomorrow, so. Borrowed from lots of people!

Name a fandom and I'll tell you which character I'll most likely:

1. bake cupcakes for:
2. trust with the keys to my car:
3. put thumbtacks on the chair thereof:
4. have a crush on:
5. pack up and leave if they moved next door:
6. vote for President (or, again, alternatively support as leader of the party for whom I vote):
7. pick as my partner in a buddy movie:
8. pair up:
9. vote off the island and into the volcano:
10. wheedle into fixing my MP3 player:

Okay, so. My commencement proceedings are coming up reasonably soon here and. This seems like a time for general joy and celebration? And what does general joy and celebration mean in I Wish I Were A Hobbit Land otherwise known as Nanni's journal?

MATHOMS.

Yes. Mathoms.

So, um. Any requests? Like, a fandom I haven't come back to for a while,or, hey, one I have! Or a pairing, or a character, or a phrase, or a continuation of something I wrote?

...Wow, Jane is reminding me more and more of what I was like at sixteen or so.

With some major differences, obviously, but poor Jane. Her utter discomfort with everyone else's innuendo and/or open appreciation of anyone else's sexual attractiveness, and her tendency to freak out and shut down any time anyone comes anywhere near the possiblity of her being interested in anyone in any romantic or sexual sense, as well as her "...but. But." response to the idea of that anyone in her cicle might not be straight and her friends might be okay with that, all of them, and that might turn out happy and - - -

Yeah.

I'll be pretty disapointed if we're expected to buy her as straight. Not that straight teenage girls can't display those patterns too, it's just. *hands*

Snagged from [personal profile] lotesse.

Name a fandom you know (that you think I know too!) and I'll tell you

1. The first character I first fell in love with
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
6. The character I would totally smooch (or possibly just snuggle)
7. The character I’d want to be like
8. The character I’d slap take by the shoulders and shake
9. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise

So. My younger brother has, via strategems that consist mostly of - - - looking at me really hopefully, like. Like. I don't know, a kitten or something, it's other brother who's totally totally a puppy, anyway. Has gotten me to read Homestuck. This was a thing done against my better judgement. And drat it, now I'm kind of hooked and I haven't even got to trolls. Arrrrgh oh well. I like making said brother happy.

...That's also how I wound up watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. And partly why I'm periodically playing Final Fantasy XIII (I watched him play to make him happy and because I like FF games, and then there was Lightning and Sazh and arrrrrgh I was doomed I cannot resist a practical, stoic soldier who is secretly so angry she can barely cope on a mission to save her sibling and a sardonic, kindly man quietly grieving for his son whom he still hopes to save omigoooooooosh I want them to be BFF! ...Everyone else is awesome too, but they don't come in until slightly later. I was already hooked).

And um. Let's see. Mom made me watch Sherlock (I don't like it). And Community (It makes me happy). And then there's Pysch, which is actually kind of bland on the plot level, I personally think, but has Dule Hill in a major role and is therefore hypnotic. I could watch him all day.

1. Think of up to 20 ships you support.
2. List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
3. Have your audience guess as many of the ships as they can.
4. Fandom hints will be given if asked in the comments.

Yesterday I learned that my brother's Friends OTP is Joey/Rachel.

This makes sense. We spent a few moments bonding over our mutual hatred of Ross before I dropped my head into my hands and said, "I can't believe I have shipping opinions on a show I don't even care about!"

Go look at your blog journal. Find the last Fandom-related thing you posted. The characters in that post are now your team-mates in the Zombie Apocalypse. How fucked are you?

Oh, hey, I have Scar and Marcoh. Excellent! ... ... ... Mind, this is bound to get extremely messy, zombies exploding from the inside out and that kind of thing, but hey! I'm unlikely to get eaten!
